Dear Rector Astapov,
On behalf of the University of Michigan’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, and also the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia, I write to extend our heartfelt gratitude to you and your staff for hosting our Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad (henceforth FHGPA) trip, “Understanding Contemporary Russia,” that took place at your University from June 19 through July 11, 2010.
Based on the feedback I have received this month from both the leaders and the participants of the FHGPA, and the results achieved at its completion, my staff and I confidently consider it to be a remarkable success. The trip did a great deal to help participants better understand the present-day political and social situation in the Russian Federation and to appreciate its rich history and culture as well the aspirations and values of its people. I have every confidence that the FHGPA participants will successfully integrate the rich expertise they obtained while in Krasnodar into their teaching, thereby contributing to a better understanding between our two countries.
Throughout the FHGPA’s stay in the Krasnodar Krai, our participants were lucky and privileged to enjoy the warmth, friendship and hospitality of the members of your faculty and staff. The lion’s share of credit for the success of our project should go directly to Dr. Irina Rayushkina. She did a simply wonderful job preparing the budget and logistics of the Kuban part of the FHGPA long before the actual arrival of the participants in Krasnodar. In particular, we applaud and appreciate Dr. Rayushkina’s efforts to match the FHGPA participants with their host families. Throughout their stay in Krasnodar, our FHGPA leaders, Alexander Knysh and Kelly Miller, received only positive feedback from the participants about their host families. This is no small feat on Dr. Rayushkina’s part, given the inevitable cultural and personal differences between their families and their American guests. Dr. Rayushkina’s organizational skills were further evident throughout the FHGPA’s stay in the Krasnodar region—during trips and excursions as well as the educational process on the Kuban State University campus. The group leaders both consider themselves lucky to have had the privilege of working with such an able administrator and educator.
I would also like to thank Dr. Rayushkina’s colleague and assistant Elena Gorelik, who not only taught Russian to the FHGPA’s advanced learners, but also accompanied the group on its long trips across the Kuban area. Dr. Gorelik’s teaching has been highly commended to me by the FHGPA participants as being simply beyond reproach, and her eagerness to assist them every step of the way was greatly appreciated by every member of the group.
Let me also extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Olga Spachil for the wonderful classes on Russian literature and culture that she offered to the group. Her profound knowledge of Russian literature and culture and her vast expertise in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Kuban region and beyond are truly impressive. The GPA participants benefitted considerably from her explanations and insights.
Finally, the leaders of the GPA would also like to thank our drivers Sasha and Volodia for their care, good cheer and unfailing solicitude throughout for the needs of the GPA participants.
Overall, therefore, from our point of view the FHGPA trip was a remarkable and uniform success. We are delighted to have had the chance to work with you and colleagues, and hope for more opportunities in the future.

От имени Центра исследований России, Восточной Европы и Евразии Мичиганского университета, а также Центра Вейзера по Европе и Евразии, пишу Вам, чтобы выразить сердечную признательность Вам и Вашим сотрудникам за прием группы преподавателей, участвовавших в проекте Фулбрайта-Хейза (далее группы) «Понимание современной России», которая находилась в Вашем вузе в период с 19 июня по11 июля 2010 года.
Основываясь на отзывах двух руководителей, а также членов группы, которые я получил в этом месяце и результатах, достигнутых по окончании поездки, мои сотрудники и я с уверенностью считаем ее выдающимся успехом. Поездка помогла участникам лучше понять современную политическую и социальную ситуацию в Российской Федерации и познакомиться с ее богатой историей и культурой, а также стремлениями и ценностями российских людей. Я уверен, что члены группы с успехом интегрируют полученный ими в Краснодаре богатый опыт в свои учебные программы, внеся таким образом вклад во взаимопонимание между нашими двумя странами.
Во время своего пребывания в Краснодарском крае члены группы испытали на себе теплоту, дружелюбие и гостеприимство работников вашего вуза. Львиную долю благодарности за успех нашего проекта заслужила Ирина Раюшкина. Она провела просто замечательную работу по подготовке бюджета и программы пребывания группы в Краснодарском крае задолго до непосредственного приезда преподавателей. Особенно мы ценим усилия И. Раюшкиной по поиску подходящих семей для проживания наших преподавателей. Все время пребывания группы в Краснодаре руководители Келли Миллер и Александр Кныш получали только положительные отзывы от участников о своих принимающих семьях. Это было большой заслугой И. Раюшкиной, учитывая неизбежные культурные и личные различия между семьями и их американскими гостями. Организационные способности Раюшкиной были и дальше продемонстрированы во время поездок и экскурсий, а также в процессе обучения в КубГУ. Руководители группы считают, что им очень повезло работать с таким способным администратором и преподавателем.
Я также хочу поблагодарить коллегу и помощницу И. Раюшкиной – Елену Горелик, которая не только преподавала русский язык продвинутого уровня некоторым членам группы, но и сопровождала группу в их длительных поездках по Краснодарскому краю. Члены группы высоко оценили уроки Е. Горелик, кроме этого все отметили ее готовность помочь в любой момент.
Разрешите мне выразить сердечную благодарность Ольге Спачиль за ее превосходные уроки по русской литературе и культуре. Ее глубокие знания русской литературы и культуры, а также истории православной церкви Краснодарского края просто поражают. Члены группы многое почерпнули из ее объяснений.
В заключении руководители группы хотели бы поблагодарить водителей Сашу и Владимира за их неизменную заботу, хорошее настроение и помощь.
В целом по нашему мнению поездка группы была замечательной и успешной. Мы рады были иметь возможность поработать с Вами и надеемся на взаимодействие в будущем. Огромное спасибо за Вашу поддержку, энергию, самоотверженность …
